Erico is a multinational company producing and marketing all over the world high-tech welding and fixing products in the nuclear, electro-technical and construction fields.

During my 12 years with Erico, I was promoted from Sales Representative to General Manager and Managing Director of the Italian subsidiary.

Located in Milan I managed the operations for the area encompassing: Italy, Southern Europe, Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey, Malta, and North Africa. I had direct contacts with major customers such as : State-owned Companies, Ministries, Italian Railways, Enel, Telecom, Alitalia , Eni, Snam, Iri, and other private-owned companies. In special cases the headquarters would ask for my assistance in big negotiations in Europe, North Africa and South America.

My most important success at this company was the very large increase in turnover which in five years rose from 100,000 USD to 18 million USD with 35% profit before taxes and the highest Return on Equity in the whole European group. All this was targeted by creating a slim efficient team of 11 people, by appointing great motivated agents, account directors and adapting to local markets quicky and seamlessly.

He was involved in the merging process of different insurance companies into the New Winterthur insurance company now Aurora. hewas the project leader of theCall center and the on-line claimsservices portal project, sharing responsibilities andtargets with McKinsey, Andersen consulting andCredit Swiss managers. The call center and the online portal were completed as planned.

Teaming with Ernst & Young, McKinsey and Winterthur ICT specialists, I was involved as a special project Consultant in the specific area of restructuring, integrating and training of five Claims Centers. All this took place while merging the five Italian insurance companies that  belonged to the Winterthur group.

La moderna medicina occidentale fa grande affidamento sui farmaci e comincia a diffondersi anche in Oriente. Le società farmaceutiche più importanti lavorano full time per convincere strutture ospedaliere e pazienti che i medicinali prodotti in Europa e Usa sono l’unico modo efficace per prevenire e combattere qualsiasi patologia.
Quesito: ma la prevenzione e la cura è solo chimica? Non credo, anzi esperienze sulle mie spalle, dei miei cari hanno dimostrato che la mia ingenuità ha provocato l’estendersi di patologie inesistenti e l’aggravamento di casi acuti mal curati o non diagnosticati.

The Future

You have heard about:

A small device installed in cars gather critical information related to accidents, malfunctions or user driving style. Operators, at service centers are alerted in real time about accident and intervention is only traffic related.

Drones will carry defribillators, gps and cameras reaching the patient instantly; Certified operators will get a call at the same time.  By using available market capabilities and simply adding connectivity and real-time communication, it will be possible to offer customers/citizens a set of very advantageous value-added services for prevention, rescue, repair and compensation.

What we have seen that works. Use cases:

  • A car driver, with his own or a leased car has to get help / a replacement car / compensation after a moderate to severe accident.
  • A car dealer and his workshop wish to maintain a closer relationship with their clients, going beyond occasional repairs, coupons and general check-ups.
  • After an accident, a driver wish to automatically contact emergency, tow away services, insurance assessors, close relatives and possibly receive by mail an immediate repair proposal from his bodyshop.

Securely integrating the cyber and physical worlds More things are being connected to address a growing range of business needs. By 2020, more than 50 billion things will connect to the Internet—seven times our human population. Examples are wearable health and performance monitors, connected vehicles, smart grids, connected oil rigs, and connected manufacturing. This Internet of Things (IoT) will revolutionize the way we work, live, play, and learn. And patent filings in application, cyberphysical, and cloud security are doubling. North America and Europe will continue to be the hotspots for innovation. In the areas of cyber-physical security, privacy protection, and application security, however, innovation is occurring on a global scale—from Asia Pacific to Latin America and the Arab States. Next-generation encryption In this context, next-generation encryption efforts based on Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) are promising. They provide the same level of encryption strength with shorter keys. The benefit is lower CPU consumption and low memory usage, two essential requirements for mobile devices such as sensors, actuators, controllers, and microcomputers, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Using an architectural approach to strengthen systems Ever revisit a city after many years only to discover a new maze of freeways? Or, perhaps, a trio of traffic lights in a town that only needed a stop sign before? Changes to transportation routes are common as communities grow and traffic increases. The same is true for the Internet. We have reached the point where network simplification is critical. And it is not because something is broken. It is a natural evolution of the Internet’s success. The Internet of Everything (IoE)—where people, processes, data, and things come online—is advancing this trend. In fact, network simplification will make the promises of IoE possible. And it will lead to less downtime, better customer care, and the delivery of entirely new services. Can existing systems meet growing demands? This trend is set to continue for the immediate future as IoE increases device types (for example, low powered sensors) and connection models (such as mesh networking).


Collective power enables a new breed of applications and services. It is hard to believe, but the concept of cloud computing dates back to the 1950s, when people used “dumb” terminals to access data housed in enormous mainframe computers. We have come a long way since then. Connecting through the cloud is now commonplace and innovators are looking for ways to complement the cloud as the Internet of Everything (IoE) bringing everything online over the next few decades. One way to address this is through fog computing, where cloud computing is extended to the edge of the network. This creates a highly virtualized platform that provides compute, storage, and networking services between end devices and traditional cloud computing data centers. These services are the building blocks of both the cloud and the fog. They are critical for supporting the emerging wave of Internet deployments, as Fog Computing requires mobility support and geo-distribution, location awareness, real-time interactions, and low latency. Also important is the ability to support a very large number of nodes in highly heterogeneous environments. Fog computing can help enable a new breed of aggregated applications and services: Smart energy distribution: Energy load-balancing applications run on network edge devices that automatically switch to alternative energies, like solar and wind, based on energy demand, availability, and the lowest price. Smart traffic lights: A video camera senses an ambulance’s flashing lights and automatically controls the traffic signals so the ambulance can pass through. Train maintenance: Sensors on self-maintaining trains monitor train components. If they detect trouble, they send an automatic alert to the train operator to stop at the next station for emergency maintenance. Fog computing is a large business opportunity. Fog computing is entering an exciting time, where it can positively affect operational costs. As IoE becomes mainstream, because of the rapid increase of connected devices, two main challenges are emerging. Reliable communication will not always be possible due to network congestion or simply bad connections. Poor network connections are an issue particularly for short-range wireless devices. It could cost billions to implement geographically distributed wireless networks that allow sensors to send real-time data back to the cloud. Certain classes of connected devices such as remote health monitoring and emergency services require very low latency. Sending data to the cloud and back to the application can negatively impact the performance of these services. Fog computing resolves problems related to congestion and latency. It provides compute, storage, and network services at the network edge. It also provides an intelligent platform to manage the distributed and real-time nature of emerging IoE infrastructures. Developing these services at the edge through fog computing will lead to new business models and opportunities for network operators.
